wanted: culture makers

Illumine Journal is open to publishing a variety of submissions including creative non-fiction, photo-essays, criticism, fiction, poetry and short films. All submissions must be related to the theme of the edition in which they will be published.

The theme for the inaugural edition is ‘Light’. The theme for the second edition is ‘Absence’.

Whilst submissions from academics are welcome, Illumine Journal is not an academic space nor a peer review journal. We are interested in publishing writing that breathes life into the writer’s personal experience of the subject matter as much as their theoretical knowledge of it. We are not interested in essays and articles that make cases for or against. We will not publish dogma or doctrine. We are happy to publish celebrations of particular art and artists, we will not publish take-downs.

We welcome submissions from people regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or other characteristics. We especially welcome submissions from beyond the western hemisphere. All written submissions must be in English and previously unpublished. Translated material is acceptable. Non-English language materials (e.g., short films) must include English subtitles. If you wish to submit but are unsure whether your material is suitable then please email to discuss. We are open to pitches.

All submissions selected for publication in the journal and placement on the website will be paid.
